About us

Sankofa US

Specialty Travel Agency

On a Sankofa US Tour of Ghana, history is not a class, history is not a book, neither is it a boring story. On a Sankofa US Tour of Ghana, history is fuel for the future, the catalyst to a better community, and the remedy for an oppressive life.

The Return Experience presented by Sankofa US is more than a tour of Ghana. It is a vacation chock full of restorative, regenerative, reviving information and experiences that will reconnect the inner peace with the inner soul.

There are three reasons why Sankofa US solely travels to Ghana West Africa.

English

In the early 1800s Ghana was colonized by the British who spoke English. As a result, English is one of the main languages spoken in Ghana which makes it easy to maneuver the country, especially from a tourist perspective.

Safety

Every year, for the past few decades, Ghana has been deemed as one of the safest countries to visit in Africa. The country is currently ranked  #2 for safety by US Diplomats. The Ghanaian government places a heavy importance on the safety of her citizens and those who visit the country. Ghana is politically stable, rapidly developing and has a low rate of violent crime.

The Gateway

Ghana is considered the gateway country for several reasons, its geographical location, its welcoming nature, the generosity of the people, and its stability and ability to communicate and lead. Ghana is the closest country to the prime meridian as well as the equator so some say it is the center of the world. Ghana has no strangers and readily welcomes everyone with the bright smile and warm phrase ‘Akwaaba’.

Historical Sites

Ghana’s history goes well beyond colonization. Present day Ghana was named the Gold Coast by the British colonials in 1821. And in 1957 Ghana gained its independence and was officially named the Republic of Ghana by the first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Food

Ghana is known for its rich spices and bold flavors. While rice is a staple across the country, especially in cities like Accra, Cape Coast, Takoradi, and Tema, there’s much more to explore. These cities are famous for their delicious fresh seafood, and you’ll also find dishes like plantain and fish served in a variety of flavorful ways.

Slave castles

There are several slave castles, which we refer to as dungeons, located along the coast. However, two of the prominent castles are St. George or Cape Coast Castle in Cape Coast and the Elmina Castle in Elmina. Everyone should visit both castles to understand exactly what happened when this massive unethical era of human trafficking took place at these sites. The castles speak to the unbelievable and insurmountable strength and endurance of our Ancestors.

Kwame and the Big Six are the forefathers of the independence, liberation, and freedom movement. Ghana is the birthplace of independence for the Black people. It’s the center of the universe.
