Anytime is the best time to visit Ghana. However, the most economical time to visit Ghana is mid-January through March and October through November. The coolest time (temperature wise) is July – September. The coolest time (party wise) is December! The dry seasons are from November to March and from July to August, when the weather is more pleasant and there is less rain.
The yellow fever vaccination is the only required inoculation. It is strongly recommended to have malaria prevention. A few other recommended vaccinations include hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, and possibly malaria prophylaxis. It's best to consult with a travel health specialist for the most up-to-date advice.
The currency used in Accra is the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS). You can exchange money at banks, forex bureaus, and some hotels. ATMs are also widely available.
Accra is generally safe for tourists, but like any major city, it’s important to take standard precautions such as avoiding isolated areas at night, not displaying valuables, and being aware of your surroundings.
The official language of Ghana is English, which is widely spoken in Accra. However, you will also hear local languages such as Twi, Ga, and Ewe.

Transportation options in Accra include taxis, tro-tros (shared minibosses), ride-hailing services like Uber and Bolt, and car rentals. Walking is also an option for short distances.
Pack light, breathable clothing suitable for hot weather, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and any necessary medications. Don’t forget a power adapter for Ghana’s electrical outlets.
Most travelers need a visa to enter Ghana. It's advisable to check the latest visa requirements from the Ghanaian embassy or consulate in your country and apply in advance.
Credit cards are accepted in major hotels, restaurants, and some shops, but it’s a good idea to carry cash for smaller purchases and markets.
Respect local customs, dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites, and be polite and courteous. Handshakes are common greetings, and it's respectful to use your right hand when offering or receiving items.
Accra operates on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) year-round.
You can use your mobile phone in Accra, but it’s advisable to check with your provider regarding international roaming charges. Purchasing a local SIM card is a cost-effective option.
Popular souvenirs include Kente cloth, bead jewelry, wooden carvings, batik fabric, and local art and crafts available at markets like the Arts Centre.
Tipping is always welcome. We recommend using the local currency. An ideal tip is 20 Ghana Cedis, however, if there was someone who helped you tremendously, 100, 200 Ghana Cedis, or more is appropriate.
Visa FAQ's
You will have to mail your passport to the Embassy of Ghana in DC or the consulate in New York New York if you are getting a regular service single entry or multiple entry visa.
It can take a minimum of 15 – 20 days for your passport to be processed through the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, DC. These days do not include the mailing process.
We can apply for a regular service visa between 90 days – 30 days prior to your tour.
3 – 5 Days. We will send the information you need prior to your flight via email.
If you apply for a visa on arrival you can keep your passport in your possession.
Delayed/Denied Passport or Visa FAQ
Please know that these delays are rare. However, if it is so severe, a new flight can be arranged by the airline.
If the delay causes you to leave 2-3 days after the intended travel date, we advise you to reschedule your trip. You will have 1 year to use your travel credit (if applicable) if you chose to cancel. Please see our the cancellation policy at www.sankofaus.com
Yes, if you have a travel insurance policy that includes such mishaps. Whether your passport/visa causes you to miss a portion or all of your trip, with the right insurance policy you can submit a claim for trip interruption or cancellation. Sankofa US will assist you by providing any documentation needed to successfully submit your claim. See your policy for specific information.
Sankofa US will help you maintain your flight credit for approximately 1 year after the original intended travel date (or the best offer the airline will commit to). If the delay is due to the fault of Sankofa US, we will also extend a credit for the ground tour portion. If the delay was due to missed deadlines, misinformation, or fraudulent information passed to Sankofa US from the client or if the Embassy of Ghana denies your visa based on information passed on to Sankofa US by the client, Sankofa US will not maintain travel credit
You are eligible to purchase travel insurance up to 24 hours before travel.
